Penang's food reputation usually gets told through its UNESCO-listed street food scene, but its most distinctive halal tradition is narrower and older than that: nasi kandar, brought by Penang's Indian-Muslim community and still centered on a handful of institutions that have been serving it for over a century in some cases.
