Kelantan
The Soul of Islam in Malaysia
Kelantan is Malaysia's most deeply Islamic state, often called 'Serambi Mekah' (The Veranda of Mecca). With over 98% Muslim population, Islam permeates every aspect of daily life — from the architecture to the arts to the governance. The state is famous for Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) with Islamic stories, traditional silver crafts, and some of the most authentic Malay-Islamic culture in the country. Kota Bharu, the capital, has over 70 mosques in the city center alone.
Must-Visit
Mosques of Kelantan
Masjid Muhammadi
The state mosque of Kelantan, built in 1867 and rebuilt in 1922. Known for its unique architecture that blends Ottoman and Malay influences. The golden dome and intricate wood carvings are iconic. Can accommodate 10,000 worshippers.

Masjid Sultan Ismail Petra
Also known as the 'Crystal Mosque of Kota Bharu' — a modern architectural marvel with walls that glow at night. Located near the waterfront. Non-Muslim visitors welcome for tours.
Masjid Beijing (Chinese Mosque)
A unique mosque built with Chinese architectural elements — pagoda-style roof, red pillars, and Chinese calligraphy alongside Arabic. Built by the Chinese-Muslim community of Kelantan.

Cultural Notes for Muslim Travelers
Kelantan is the most conservative state in Malaysia. Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees are expected everywhere, not just at mosques.
Alcohol is not sold anywhere in Kelantan. This is the only state in Malaysia with a complete prohibition on alcohol sales.
Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) is UNESCO-recognized and unique to Kelantan. The stories are Islamic epics — a beautiful fusion of faith and art.
All food in Kelantan is effectively halal by default due to the overwhelmingly Muslim population. Still, JAKIM-certified restaurants offer the highest assurance.
Salaam Suites was built by a local Muslim entrepreneur to showcase Kelantanese hospitality. It's more than a hotel — it's a cultural ambassador.
Kota Bharu is also home to our boutique hotel and its own dedicated Kelantan travel site, if you want to go deeper than this overview.
