About JAKIM Certification

JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) is the official government body responsible for halal certification in Malaysia. The MS 1500:2019 standard covers the entire supply chain — from sourcing, processing, storage, to serving. A JAKIM-certified outlet has been physically audited and verified.

Important: "No pork, no lard" signs are not the same as JAKIM certification. They indicate the absence of pork but do not guarantee halal processing standards, alcohol-free ingredients, or supply chain integrity. When in doubt, look for the JAKIM logo or ask to see the certificate.

Common Questions

Halal Travel FAQs

What does 'No Pork, No Lard' mean? Is it halal?

Not necessarily. This sign only means the restaurant doesn't use pork or lard. It says nothing about alcohol in sauces, non-halal meat sourcing, cross-contamination, or processing standards. For true halal assurance, look for the JAKIM logo.

Can Muslims eat at food courts in Malaysia?

It depends. Many food courts have dedicated halal sections (look for the green JAKIM sign). However, shared cooking equipment and cross-contamination can be a concern. We recommend choosing food courts where all stalls are halal-certified, or sticking to stalls with visible JAKIM certificates.

Is alcohol in food always haram?

Yes, if the alcohol is intoxicating and intentionally added as an ingredient (e.g., wine in sauce, beer batter). However, naturally occurring trace alcohol from fermentation (like in soy sauce, vinegar, or bread) is generally considered permissible by most scholars. When in doubt, ask the restaurant or choose JAKIM-certified outlets.

What about seafood restaurants? Are they automatically halal?

Most seafood is halal by default (with exceptions like shellfish for some schools). However, seafood restaurants may use non-halal ingredients in sauces, cook with lard, or serve alcohol. Always verify the cooking methods and ingredients, especially at Chinese seafood restaurants.

How do I check if a JAKIM certificate is real?

Use the official JAKIM Halal Verification Portal at halal.gov.my. Enter the certificate number or scan the QR code on the certificate. HalalTravelMalaysia also cross-references our database with JAKIM's monthly updates.
